Dean College of London

Dean College of London, which has been in existence nearly 25 years, was founded in response to a basic demand from parents – that their children be prepared as intensively and successfully as possible for public examination in the United Kingdom. The British Accreditation Council (BAC)has accredited Dean College of London for independent further and higher education since 1990.

We clearly recognise that a successful conclusion to a young person ’s secondary education is his or her entry in to a university,a professional body or other training in the career of their choice.

Academic strengths

Dean College of London has grown and changed with the times. We focus our efforts on the needs of students in the modern world – the world of information technology, mathematics, the natural sciences, finance, business and computer science. We do this through the medium of English, the international language of the modern business and educational environment.

The College is a recognised centre for many examination boards, including GCE boards and professional bodies such as the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Royal Society of Arts, City & Guilds, and the Association of Accounting Technicians.
Dean College of London now comprises the following departments (details of the courses are given in this guide): GCE and GCSE Studies; English as a Foreign Language (EFL); Computer Studies;and Business Studies. The College also offers a one-year degree Foundation course,
which has been approved by a number of universities. On successful completion of this course, students are guaranteed a place at a UK university.
All staff at the College are fully and professionally qualified and have extensive experience in higher education in the United Kingdom.
Facilities

The College occupies large and modern premises situated in the heart of a popular residential area in north London. It has its own car park, a canteen, a recreation room and a well-equipped library. The College also has a large computer room, equipped with numerous modern computers and software packages. Students on all courses are encouraged to learn how to use the computers.

A wide selection of textbooks, reference books, journals and periodicals is held in the College library, housed on the top floor. The College is close to both the Finsbury Park and Holloway Road shopping and business areas. There are libraries and parks nearby and within a few minutes’ walk of the College is the Michael Sobell Sports Centre, one of the largest and most modern sports centres in Britain.

Student Life

The smooth and efficient running of the College is entrusted to the principle and the director of studies. The students can at any time approach all members of staff for help and advice concerning both their studies and welfare. Each student will be allocated a personal tutor
from members of the College staff, and they will meet with the student regularly to assist with any academic problems.Students will be set regular homework and tests in each class to monitor their progress so that any difficulties can be detected and dealt with quickly.
Progress reports are given to students and their parents or guardians each term.
There is also a cafeteria dispensing hot and cold drinks and snacks adjoining the recreation room, with a television, table tennis and pool table.
Student profile
Dadirai Agnes Machingauta,
Zimbabwe

‘I began studying at Dean College of London
in September 2002 to improve my English
language skills. My ambition is to complete
the course in June of this year and then
enrol on a degree course at the American
University in London.
When I arrived in the country I found London very different to Zimbabwe, but the College and the staff made me feel very welcome and helped me adjust.
The local area and community is also very lively and friendly. One of the best things about the College is that the classes are smaller meaning the lecturers can give us plenty of support and guidance.I know that my brand-new friends there  will make a major difference in my academic, professional and personal life.
Once I have completed my studies, I would like to work for an international organisation back home in Zimbabwe.’
