These are just a few of the words that describe The Theatre
School, DePaul University, one of America's oldest and
most respected theatre training schools. Founded as the
Goodman School of Drama in 1925, The Theatre School is
the Midwest's oldest theatre conservatory and is recognized
nationally as one of the top conservatory programs in
the United States. Our training programs emphasize learning-by-doing
in a format that is intensive, highly disciplined, and
focused on individual development. We produce more than
200 public performances each season, featuring students
in every aspect of production. Our goal is to prepare
students for careers in professional theatre. And our
approach works: our alumni populates the theatres of Chicago
and their work can be seen on film, television, and in
theatres all over the world. |

The Campus
The Theatre School is situated on the
University's 36-acre Lincoln Park Campus amid one of Chicago's
most attractive residential neighborhoods. The Theatre School
and the Design Annex include classrooms for instruction in all
facets of theatre (several are equipped for performance), rehearsal
space and faculty offices. There are also studios for scenery
design, a light lab, a script library, costume and and scenic
shops, and a 10,000-piece costume collection. The potpourri
of stores, theatres, restaurants, and music clubs in the neighborhood
reflect the urban environment of DePaul
and the dynamic community of DePaul's students.

Faculty and Staff
"The goal of our program is to prepare people for the profession,
and learning from those who are in it is a central aspect
a major strength of our school," says Theatre School Dean
John Culbert and award-winning lighting and scenic designer.
He is just one of many of the facuty members successfully working
in the industry in which they are teaching. Just to name a few,
Performance Chair John Jenkins worked with Samuel Beckett as
an actor in Mr. Beckett's direction of Waiting for Godot and
Endgame. Acting professor Dexter Bullard is an award-winning
director and Artistic Director of critically-
acclained and experimental physical theatre company, Plasticene.
Chair of the Theatre Studies program and head of Playwriting,
Dean Corrin is a member of the Playwrights' Ensemble at Chicago's
Victory Gardens Theatre (winner of the 2001 Regional Tony Award)
where four of his plays have premiered. Chair of the Design/Technical
Programs and head of the Costume Design program, Nan Cibula-Jenkins
is an award winning costume designer who has designed several
of David Mamet's feature films and Broadway productions. Check

Alumni Connections
Graduates of The Theatre School include
Gillian Anderson, John C Reilly, Karen Aldredge, Eugene Lee,
Amy Pietz, Joe Mantegna and scores of others. Alumni of The
Theatre School and the Goodman School of Drama work around the
world on stage, in television and film and in a myriad of other
successful careers. Soon after receiving her Master's degree
in Acting in 1994, Dorcas Johnson appeared in The Merchant of
Venice at Chicago's Goodman Theatre and on its international
tour. "While learning how to breathe and move at The Theatre
School, I discovered a great deal about dedication, determination
and maintenance." Amy Pietz stated "DePaul trained
me for every kind of work - from classical theatre to television
situation comedy. I feel prepared for any opportunity, be it
in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles or London. I received great
improvisational, vocal and physical training at DePaul and I
learned more
about being an actor than I could have at any other theatre
training program."

Performance Spaces
Merle Reskin Theatre For decades, Chicago audiences have been
subscribing to our work and following the careers of our young
artists as they leave the school. DePaul acquired the Blackstone
Theatre from the Shubert Organization in 1988. In 1992, the
theatre was renamed the Merle Reskin Theatre in honor of a major
donor. The 1,325-seat Reskin, with state-of-the-art sound, computerized
lighting equipment and professional standards, is now home of
The Theatre School's major productions. Upon hearing of the
acquisition, one Theatre School student had this to say: "To
me, the opportunity to perform in
Chicago's Reskin Theatre is like getting the chance to drive
a Ferrari."
Athenaeum Theatre
Located just a mile and a half from The Theatre School, the
Athenaeum Studio Four performance space is where our New Directors
Series and other productions suitable for a studio space occur.
This theatre is a 80-seat black box that allows our students
to interact with a more intimate audience and new directors
from our MFA Directing Program.
