in Germany
The
oldest university in Germany was founded in Heidelberg in 1386.
There are more than 300 institutions of higher education located
all over Germany including: 82 Universities; 132 Fachhochschulen
(offering shorter and more practically-orientated courses) and 46
colleges of music and fine arts.
- In 1995 over
1.900 000 students were registered, 135.000 of whom came from
abroad.
- A broad range
of study possibilities is offered: 400 different courses of study
in all.
- German universities
are autonomous and centred on research and teaching.
- They welcome
scholars and scientists from all over the world.
- Most universities
are state institutions. There are no study fees at German universities.
Each German
university has a Foreign Student Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt)
responsible for questions relating to foreign applicants and students.
They are your main source of advice for questions ranging from your
initial inquiry up to the solution of personal study problems.
