Museum contains one of the most comprehensive collections
of antiquities and books anywhere in the world. The

and specialist libraries such as the London Library
and Kings Fund Library.
World in one
city
London
is the world's most diverse and multi-cultural city
with 300 languages spoken among its 7.3 million residents.
Its education sector is equally diverse with 200 countries
represented among its 370,000 students. London is
the most popular city in the world for international
students choosing to study outside their home country
– with 73,000 currently studying in the city
which is more than New York and Sydney. Students play
a crucial role in making London so dynamic and your
experience in this city will provide you with a network
of friends from all over the world.
London is one of the most cosmopolitan
places in the world. Where else can you order breakfast
in Farsi, book a taxi in Urdu, ask for afternoon coffee
in Arabic and spend the evening chatting with your
friends in Cantonese?
London
is certainly the capital for multicultural events
and festivals, and hosts the big annual celebrations
for the Chinese, Sikh, Bengali and Hindu New Years.
London also boasts some of the greatest festivals
in the world – you can witness anything from
Turkish belly dancers to 4 x 4 Bhangra dancers, Bharatanatyam
dancers to flamenco dancers and Russian classical
ballet to Mexican Folklorico. Some of the highlights
from the London calendar include:
- The London
Mela is one of the largest Indian festivals
in the world with 80,000 people enjoying the
event each year. This free Asian outdoor festival
has something for everyone, from pop stars
Raghav and Stereo Nation, classical musical
sets, cabaret acts, food and cultural stalls,
martial arts and street theatre.
- The Notting
Hill Carnival has worldwide recognition
and has marked its 40th anniversary. It’s
Europe’s largest street festival, attracting
over a million people each year. This multicultural
and multiracial audience truly reflects the
full diversity of the UK’s capital city.
- Every year London celebrates
St Patrick's Day with a huge parade and free
festival on the banks of the River Thames.
Tens of thousands of people celebrate the
St Patrick's Day on 17 March each year. The
Parade contains a stream of floats, marching
bands, dance schools and troupes representing
Irish county associations making the annual
St Patrick's Day celebrations a day to remember.
- During the Chinese
New Year celebrations, thousands of
Londoners descend on Trafalgar Square, Leicester
Square and Chinatown to enjoy the colourful
spectacular of the annual Chinese New Year
celebrations. In the past the public have
been treated to a wonderful parade through
the streets of central London plus martial
arts’ displays, lion and dragon dancing,
fireworks and much, much more at a special
stage installed at the heart of Trafalgar
Square.
