About the University of North Carolina (UNC)

UNC University was founded in 1795 and is the oldest public university in the country. It’s located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, which is about 15 miles from Raleigh. The university has around 29,000 students and 1,500 faculty members.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was chartered on December 11, 1789 by an act of the state legislature as a public school for higher education and that’s when it was known as “Moravian College”. In 1799, it became the first public college in North Carolina when it received its charter from the state legislature.

In 1811, it became known as UNC-Chapel Hill after receiving its own land grant from the state legislature. In 1812, it had its first building constructed on campus (Old East).

In 1819, William Richardson Davie donated some land near Hillsborough to be used as a site for military instruction; this was later named Fort Alston after Colonel Alexander Lillington Alston who died during the War of 1812. In 1822, the Board of Trustees changed the name of their institution to “University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill” (UNC).
